Connecting to a Network Printer

This section is for connecting to a printer has an ethernet cable that plugs into a router or switch. The printer does not plug directly into any computer.
Connecting to an Auto-Detected Printer (Bonjour/Zeroconf Printer)
- Power on the printer.
- Click Start > Administration > Configure Printers.
- Type in the administrator password and click OK.
- Double-click New Printer.
- The message "Readng printer database..." will appear (it may take a few minutes before the "Add a Printer" window appears).
- A list of printers found on the network will be listed under "Use a detected printer:". Click your printer.
- Click the Forward button.
- The IDL will automatically detect supported printers and fill in the “Manufacturer:", "Model:", and "Driver:", fields for the detected printer. Important: If the recommended printer is an HP model, look above or below the selected printer for the same model followed by HPLIP. Choose this model instead of the recommended model. (HPLIP indicates official HP drivers).
- Click Forward.
- The "Description:" and "Location:" fields do not need to be filled in.
- Click Apply.
- The new printer will appear in the Printers panel.
- Right-click on the printer icon and choose "Make Default".
- To save the printer configuration settings, click Start > Administration > Save Configuration.
- Type in the administrator password and click OK.
- When the “Configuration saved” message appears, click OK.
- The printer is now ready to print.
Connecting to a Printer that is not Auto-Detected (HP JetDirect, TCP/Socket)
- Power on the printer.
- Click Start > Administration > Configure Printers.
- Type in the administrator password and click OK.
- Double-click New Printer.
- The message "Readng printer database..." will appear (it may take a few minutes before the "Add a Printer" window appears).
- In Printer Type, click Network Printer
- Click IPP Printer or Printer on CUPS server (IPP), select TCP/Socket, HP JetDirect, Raw connection
- Enter the IP address and port number of the printer
- Click Forward
- Select the "Manufacturer" from the drop down menu
- Select the "Model" from the drop down menu
- Select the "Driver" from the drop down menu. Important: If the recommended printer is an HP model, select the drive labeled HPLIP, even if it is not the recommended driver. (HPLIP indicates official HP drivers).
- Click Forward
- Name the printer
- Click Apply
- The printer you just added will now be listed in the printer window. Right click the newly added printer.
- Select "Make Default." A green check mark will appear over the newly added printer.
- To save the printer configuration settings, click Start > Administration > Save Configuration.
- Type in the administrator password and click OK.
- When the “Configuration saved” message appears, click OK.
- The printer is now ready to print.
