Buy default, Inveneo Desktop Linux is set to English. The default language of IDL can be change to French, Spanish and Portuguese. To fully change the language, 3 steps need to be followed plus changing the keyboard layout, though keyboard is not dependent on the default language.

Changing the Default Language System-wide

  1. Click Start > All Programs > System > Language Support
  2. Type in the administrator password and click OK.
  3. A window will appear that reads "Checking available language support." It will close automatically when if finishes loading.
  4. Under the section "Default Language," choose the language and region. The four primary languages supported in IDL are English, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.
  5. Click OK.
  6. To save the language settings, click Start > Administration > Save Configuration.
  7. Type in the administrator password and click OK.
  8. When the “Configuration saved” message appears, click OK.
  9. Reboot the computer by switching power off, then back on. After IDL finishes initializing, the system language you just set will be the new default language.


Note
The language will not change immediately, but only after saving the configuration and rebooting.


Changing the Default Dictionary in OpenOffice

Changing the default language of the system will change the menus in OpenOffice to the system language. However, the dictionary will still default to English. The dictionary should be manually changed in OpenOffice

  1. Click Start > Write.
  2. Click Tools > Options.
  3. On the left side, double-click Language Settings to expand the menu.
  4. Click Languages
  5. On the right side, under the section "Default languages for documents," in the drop down menu "Western," choose the language that matches the system language.
  6. Click OK.
  7. To save the setting, click Start > Administration > Save Configuration.
  8. Type in the administrator password and click OK.
  9. When the “Configuration saved” message appears, click OK.
Note
Only default languages with a blue check/tic to the left of the language are installed. Select languages with blue check/tic. Otherwise, the dictionary and spellcheck will not work properly.


Changing the Keyboard Layout

The keyboard layout is not dependent on the default language of the system. You should change the keyboard layout if you are not using a US English Qwerty keyboard.

  1. Click Start > All Programs > Settings > Keyboard Settings.
  2. Click on the tab labeled Layouts.
  3. Under the section "Keyboard Layouts" click Add.
  4. Scroll to and click the new keyboard layout.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click on the keyboard labeled "us" in the Keyboard Preferences window.
  7. Click Delete.
  8. Now only the new keyboard is listed. If another keyboard layout is listed first, the system will always default to the first keyboard layout listed in the "Keyboard layouts" section.
  9. To save the keyboard layout, click Start > Administration > Save Configuration.
  10. Type in the administrator password and click OK.
  11. When the “Configuration saved” message appears, click OK.
