The Desktop and Icons

The main screen displayed upon starting up the Inveneo Desktop Linux is called the Desktop.

The Desktop contains program icons that can be double-clicked to run programs for writing a letter, accessing the Web and many other activities.



The Desktop also contains folder icons that may be opened by double-clicking on them. The folder "USB Disks" displays files saved on a USB memory stick (when plugged into one of the ICS's available USB ports). The Network folder lists servers on the network. The Shared Files folder shows all the documents and other files saved by the user on the Inveneo Hub Server. (This icon only appears when the Inveneo Computing Station is on the same network as an Inveneo Hub Server.)



Icons allow users to quickly access favorite files, pictures, programs and web shortcuts. To add or remove icons to the desktop, see the Chapter 9 System Preferences, Configuring Desktop Icons.

Task Bar

The Task Bar is the space at the lower section of the Desktop.

The Task Bar is divided in three sections:

  • Image:Taskbar3.png - Start Menu

Allows access to all programs installed in Inveneo Desktop Linux.

  • Image:Taskbar4.png - Active Application Area

Buttons appear for each active programs you are running; click on a button to switch to the application.

Offers access to the trash can, network connection, volume, and current time; move the mouse pointer over icon to see more information, including volume level and date.

Start Menu

The Administration menu provides access to system-related features and settings.

The All Programs menu provides access to all installed programs, including games, multimedia and network settings.

The Start menu is organized to display the most commonly accessed programs when clicked on with the mouse. The Start menu also contains two folders, Administration and All Programs.

Windows

Windows refer to the way you view and work with open programs, documents, web browser pages, pictures, folders, and settings displays.

The key elements of most windows include:

The Title Bar

Located in the top of the window and titled in bold letters; click and hold on the title bar then drag the mouse to move a window around on the screen.

The application icon is located in the left corner of the Title Bar. Click on the the Title Bar's Application icon to display windows control options:
  • Maximize the window to fill the entire screen
  • Unmaximize the window
  • Hide the window minimizes the current window
  • Hide all others minimizes all open windows except the current active window
  • Shade the window like a window shade so that only the Title Bar appears
  • Stick
  • Always on top keeps the current window always visible, even while working on other windows that are maximized. A check mark or tick will appear when always on top is active.
  • Send to moves the program to other open desktops. Since Inveneo Desktop Linux only has one desktop, the program cannot be sent to a new desktop.
  • Close the window, which also exits the active program if it is the only window open.

The window control icons in the right side of the title bar also offer the same resize and close control as the Application icon menu, and include

  • Image:WindowContrl1.png - shades a window so only the Title Bar appears
  • Image:WindowContrl2.png - minimizes a window to the Task Bar (click the Application button in the Task Bar to bring the window back to the desktop)
  • Image:WIndowContrl3.png - maximizes a window to fill the screen (click it again to unmaximize the screen)
  • Image:WindowContrl4.png - closes the window (and program if it is the only open window for that program).

Resizing

The resizing edge, which make windows bigger or smaller when dragged; move the mouse cursor to the left, right, or bottom edge or any corner of an open window and the cursor will change to indicate the resize pointer; click and hold on the edge or corner then drag the mouse to make a window bigger or smaller.
