Installing & Uninstalling Applications

The Inveneo Computing Station comes pre-installed with many useful and popular programs. In addition, users with administrative privileges may install additional applications from a variety of sources. The process of installing new applications involves the following steps:
- Reboot IDL with the "Install Mode" option.
- Run the Synaptic Package Manager and choosing the program to install.
- Download and installing the program.
- Reboot IDL in "Normal" mode.
- Verifying that the program is installed and can be launched.

Installing Applications
To install new applications, IDL must be rebooted to "Install Mode". To reboot to "Install Mode":
- Click Start > Administration > Reboot System.
- Type in the administrative password and click OK.
- Click the "Install Mode" option then click the Reboot button.
- The system will reboot, and when the Desktop appears it will display "INSTALL MODE ACTIVE / REBOOT TO EXIT".
- Click Start > All Programs > System > Synaptic Package Manager.
- Type in the administrative password and click OK.
- Click the scroll bar in the left column to browse the available application categories. For instance, scrolling to and then clicking on the category "Graphics" will reveal in the right column a list of graphics-related programs available to download and install.
- Scroll through the list of programs to find the program you would like to install. Note: Programs already installed on the Inveneo Desktop Station will be marked with the selection box marked, to indicate the program is already installed.
- Click the selection box to the left of the program you wish to install. For example, to install the program "tuxpaint," click the check box next to it.
- A menu will pop up; select "Mark for Installation".
- A dialog box will appear, listing the file or files that will be installed; click the Mark button.
- Continue to scroll through categories and the lists of programs to install additional programs, if you wish.
- When you are finished selecting the program or programs you wish to install, click the Apply button above the list of programs.
- A dialog box will appear, listing the program files that will be downloaded and installed.
- Click the Apply button.
- The Synaptic Package Manager will download the necessary file or files - the process may take minutes or hours, depending on the number and size of selected files.
- When the download completes, the Synaptic Package Manager will install the program or programs.
- When the install process is complete, the installation dialog box will disappear and the Synaptic Package Manager will show the list of categories and programs as described above.
- Click the "File" menu and select Quit..
- To begin using the newly installed program or programs, reboot IDL by clicking Start > Administration > Reboot System.
- Type in the administrative password and click OK.
- The option "Normal Reboot" will be highlighted; click the Reboot button.
- IDL will reboot with the new program or programs installed and ready to use.

| Install Mode should only be used to install programs, not to customize settings or use the installed program. IDL should be in Normal Mode when customizing or running programs. |
Finding Installed Applications
To locate newly installed programs:
- Click Start > All Programs and then click the appropriate subfolder to locate the newly installed program. For instance, if the graphics program "TuxPaint" was installed, click the Graphics subfolder; the program "TuxPaint" will be listed among the available graphics program.
- Click the program to launch it.
Uninstalling Applications
To uninstall an application you installed and no longer wish to keep:
- Click Start > Administration > Reboot System.
- Type in the administrative password and click OK.
- Click the "Install Mode" option then click the Reboot button.
- The system will reboot, and when the Desktop appears it will display "INSTALL MODE ACTIVE / REBOOT TO EXIT".
- Click Start > All Programs > System > Synaptic Package Manager.
- Type in the administrator password and click OK.
- When the "Synaptic Package Manager" window appears, click the scroll bar in the left column to go to the category of the application you wish to uninstall. For example, to uninstall the program "tuxpaint," click the category Graphics and then scroll through the list of packages to the right until you reach tuxpaint.
- Click the selection box to the left of the program you wish to install. In this example, to uninstall the program "tuxpaint," click the check box next to it.
- In the pop-up menu, select "Mark for Removal".
- Click the Apply button.
- A "Summary" window will appear; click OK to begin the uninstall process.
- A progress indicator will appear to detail the application uninstall process.
- When the application has been uninstalled, the progress window will automatically close.
- Quit the "Synaptic Package Manager" by clicking the File menu then choose Quit.
- Reboot the ICS to "Normal" mode by clicking Start > Administration > Reboot System.
- Type in the administrator password and click OK.
- Click the Reboot button.
- The ICS will reboot and return to "Normal" user mode and the uninstalled application will no longer appear in the Start > All Programs menu.
